Joel and Marvel Vander Kooi
Serving in Thailand on Sponsored Deployment | Asia-Pacific
Marvel and Joel met in college and married December 27, 1997. In January 2000, they went to Thailand for the first time in the United States Peace Corps. After a year in Peace Corps service, Marvel and Joel put in an additional seven months with an Australian mission group before returning to the United States.
Before re-entering the mission field, Marvel was a teacher and Joel was an attorney in the United States. In 2006, after serving in a short-term anti-human trafficking mission assignment, Marvel and Joel felt led to start a platform for planting Christian schools that would be open to children at-risk. In 2008, they moved with their children to Chiang Mai, Thailand, with a goal to plant a Christian school for local children. In 2010, the School of Promise opened. This school is open to children in grades one through six, and approximately half of the students are considered at-risk and attend on scholarships. The Vander Kooi’s continued at the School of Promise until 2015, when they returned to the United States on a 16-month furlough.
Upon returning to Thailand in 2016, the Vander Kooi’s have taken on roles focused on expanding the ministry to grow the School of Promise to offer K-12 education, to plant similar schools in other locations, and to expand resources and training in ministry for the Thai people. Marvel is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages. Their home church is High Country Church of the Nazarene in Buena Vista, Colorado.
Going Where the Church is Not Yet
Today there are over 4.3 billion people who live in areas where there is little to no gospel witness. 4.3 billion people who have not heard the message of the gospel, who have never heard the name of Jesus. We believe that everyone deserves to hear. God continues to call the Church of the Nazarene to spread the message of the gospel, to preach holiness, and to bring good news to the poor all over the world. The task is enormous; far too big for anyone to do alone, but together we can go where the church is not yet and see people, communities, and nations transformed. Reaching these people begins with one step, a step of obedience and faithfulness that says yes to God’s call. Take your first step and start your journey toward serving in missions today.
